Once in a while, I will get a mad hair to learn a foreign language. I will then buy a teach yourself book or do some free online lessons, and stop doing the homework tasks round about lesson four. This is what happened with Arabic and Italian and Scottish Gaelic. I can understand written Italian OK because of the similarity with French. I was going to make myself keep up with it, and make myself read something out of the G d S every week. But no.
Current mad hair - no, not Finnish actually SINCE YOU ASK*, not at the moment anyhow. Norwegian**. Ha. Not so predictable. (although if you were reading you will have seen that I am following the adventures of Henning Solberg***)
It might be useful in business.
It's going to be the same old story again. Get materials, learn a bit, let it fall by the wayside.
*although it would be nice to know just enough to get oneself into terrible scrapes.
** I tend to go for things where I already can figure out a little bit of what I'm reading. And where there is either a) some song that I like that is in that language and I want to understand how the words all fit together and that, or b) some sporting connection, some articles that I want to read.
*** phrase "The Adventures Of Henning Solberg" coined by another blogger.
