Sad.

I didn't put up a memento post for John Peel's death, althought I was shocked and saddened. I don't know why. I've been "off" posting, a fact which you can match up with your sense of surprise at seeing any update from me at all. Excuse, schmexcuse.

I am making a memento post for Fred Dibnah, who died today. BBC report. I loved Fred's TV programmes. I learnt things, I was entertained, and I had the pleasure of listening to someone who was enthusiastic about what he did.

Nothing really to add, other than I agree with your sentiments. Seeing the expression of contentment on his face when he was driving his steam engine, or his enthusiasm about flying buttresses or Victorian steam mills, gave me an real feeling of warmth. He brought the genius of our ancestors to life, and gave an insight into the realities of life in past times. He was genuine, he was his own man, he didn't care what anybody else thought, and he was genuinely talented. A sad loss.

Bollocks. I did not know about this at all, and I actually watched the news this weekend.
Well RIP FD. I thoroughly enjoyed your programmes about steam and buildings. Same as that other dude Adam Hart-Davies, it always looked like Fred was having a right laugh and getting paid for it.
