Nothing really to add, other than I agree with your sentiments. Seeing the expression of contentment on his face when he was driving his steam engine, or his enthusiasm about flying buttresses or Victorian steam mills, gave me an real feeling of warmth. He brought the genius of our ancestors to life, and gave an insight into the realities of life in past times. He was genuine, he was his own man, he didn't care what anybody else thought, and he was genuinely talented. A sad loss.
